While celebratory champagne was cracked in recognition "for services to transgender equality", Ashley also told of how she once bedded INXS front man, Michael Hutchence.

Speaking to the Sunday Mirror, Ashley, 77, said the meeting occurred in 1983, while the former model was staying at a Sydney hotel promoting a book."He came in with about 15 people. He was very young... the most incredibly handsome man I had ever seen. He had a marvellous head of hair and just very sweet," Ashley told the paper.

"He came over and said, 'Would you like a drink?' I said 'Yes.' I hadn't the foggiest idea who he was."It was rather nice because he said, 'Would you like to come up to my room and have a bottle of champagne?' We made love and very nice it was too."A friend told her who he was, but April said: "Having known the Beatles, The Who, the Rolling Stones and the whole caboodle, I was never really interested in any of that.So I said, 'Well what is INXS?' But I had found out personally."Hutchence died at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Double Bay in 1997. While the coroner ruled his death as suicide, it's often alleged that it was an auto-erotic asphyxiation accident that caused Hutchence's death. His family disputed the coroner's finding at the time.

Born George Jamieson in 1935, Ashley became a model in the 1960s after the successful surgery, working for the likes of Vogue, and marrying into British aristocracy in 1963, wedding Arthur Corbett. She began campaigning for transgender rights when her marriage was ruled illegal as her birth certificate still recognised her as being 'male' in 1969. At the time, Corbett was seeking an annulment in their marriage. Ashley eventually won the right to change her birth certificate to 'female' in 2004 when the Gender Recognition Act was created in the UK.
