After debuting her penchant for meaty outfits on the cover of Japanese Men's Vogue last week, see our Meat Lady Gaga blog for more details, Gaga decided to further showcase the meaty clothing line at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards.

While Gaga wasn't wearing real meat the outfit that she wore at the MTV VMAs did look pretty real and lead vegan Ellen DeGeneres to present Gaga with an alternative to the meaty get-up, a lettuce bikini and skirt!

The 'Alejandro' singer appeared on Ellen's special VMAs show which she filmed after the awards ceremony.

On the show Ellen asked Gaga "What is the purpose of the meat?"

Gaga replied "Well, it is certainly no disrespect to anyone that is vegan or vegetarian. As you know, I am the most judgement free human being on the earth. However, it has many interpretations but for me this evening if we don't stand up for what we believe in and if we don't fight for our rights pretty soon we're going to have as much rights as the meat on our own bones. And, I am not a piece of meat"

We aren't sure about that response, and neither was Ellen so she told Gaga that next time she wanted to pose in a bikini she should wear the lettuce outfit instead!

Animal rights group, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) commented on Gaga's outfit stating "After time spent under the TV lights, it would smell like the rotting flesh that it is and likely be crawling in maggots,"

PETA also commented on Gaga's meat bikini shoot for Japanese Men's Vogue "No matter how beautifully it is presented, flesh from a tortured animal is flesh from a tortured animal, Meat represents bloody violence and suffering, so if that's the look they were going for, they achieved it."

Lady Gaga walked away with 8 VMAs yesterday. Her clip 'Bad Romance' won Best Female Video, Best Pop Video, Best Dance Music Video, Best Choreography, Best Direction, Best Editing and Video of the Year. Gaga and Beyonce also won Best Collaboration for 'Telephone (Extended Remix)'

While Gaga didn't perform this year she did manage to have 3 wardrobe changes! Gaga paid homage to the late designer Alexander McQueen, whose designs featured heavily in her award-winning clip ''Bad Romance', by arriving in a regal McQueen design complete with 12-inch Armadillo heels.
